Papa John’s is the fourth-largest pizza restaurant franchise in the United States. Its original headquarters are located in Jefferson, Kentucky. ‘Papa’ John Schnatter opened the first Papa John’s restaurant in 1984. He financed the operation by selling his Camaro Z28 and operated the business out of a local tavern. Due to its popularity, the Papa John’s restaurant relocated to another space. In 1993, Papa John’s became a publicly traded company. It expanded to more than 1,500 stores throughout the United States. In addition to pizza, popular menu items include chicken wings, garlic sauce and dessert. Currently, Papa John’s has more than 5,199 franchises in the United States and throughout the world. Global franchise locations include Latin America, Europe and Asia. In 2017, John Schnatter resigned as CEO of the Papa John’s franchise. As of 2021, they’re now headquartered in both Louisville, Kentucky and the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan areas. Last year, Papa John’s generated more than $2.1 billion in total revenue. The company employs approximately 15,000 people.
